Observation and Commentary On the Dental Industry

Imus Fired by CBS Radio

Posted by dentalinsider on April 13, 2007

CBS Radio fired long time shock jock Don Imus on Thursday, due to his “NAPPY HEADED HOS” comment that he made last week. Imus was due to start a two week suspension on April 16th, but late Thursday, CBS CEO Les Moonves dropped the axe. Moonves spent the afternoon meeting with Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, both of which were calling for a protest until Imus was taken off the air. You can read the full story, if you haven’t already here.

Here is my take on this story…

Don Imus makes a racial comment on air last week and spend 3 days apologizing to the public for the comment. He even goes on the Al Sharpton Show to address the comment and apologizes again. MSNBC cancels his daily simulcast on Wednesday and CBS gives him a 2 week un-paid suspension starting Monday. On Thursday, Les Moonves meets with Sharpton and Jackson, and then fires Imus. This whole thing stinks!

Do I think what Imus said was wrong? Yes. Should he have apologized? Yes and he did…more than once. Do I think his sponsors should have pulled out? No, he made a mistake, he apologized and was willing to meet with the Rutgers Basketball team. Did Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have anything to do with his firing? You bet they did…
In my opinion…Les Moonves’ balls were in the vice called Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. They did nothing but use bullying tactics to force Imus’ firing.

“There has been much discussion of the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly young women of color trying to make their way in this society,” CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves

Les, have you looked at MTV and VH-1 lately?, both owned by CBS.

“It’s not about taking Imus down,” Sharpton said. “It’s about lifting decency up.”

Why aren’t Sharpton and Jackson outraged about the rap/hip hop videos played on MTV and VH-1? Oh, there’s that double standard again.

So how is this dental related you ask? One of Imus’ biggest sponsors, Procter and Gamble, were the first to jump ship. PG owns Oral B, Glide Floss and Crest brand names. Here are all of the other sponsors that were so quick to jump, American Express, Sprint Nextel, General Motors and Staples.

I for one am disappointed that CBS didn’t show any backbone and hope that they take a hard look at MTV and VH-1 and make some changes, for the good of all.

What are your thoughts on this? We want to hear from you. Send us an email or post a comment.

I will have an anesthetic shortage update over the weekend and will post it then.

One Response to “Imus Fired by CBS Radio”

  1. I would love to know if Sharpton and Jackson are going to make an apology to the Duke Lacrosse team since they are innocent of their crimes. What happened to our freedom of speech? It seems like it’s always a double standard. Does anyone have a problem when Chris Rock calls white people honky *** crackers? or what about the Miss Black america? I don’t have a problem with these things, it’s just I thought eveyone was suppose to be equal no matter our race. More people should be focusing their attention on the crimes that go on in this country everday like illegal immigation not pety he said she said stuff.
