Family-owned Dental Equipment Manufacturer Passes Leadership to Next Generation

A-dec, the largest dental equipment manufacturer in the U.S., today named Scott Parrish President of the family-owned company, succeeding his father-in-law and dental industry icon Ken Austin. The announcement was made by Austin and his wife, A-dec co-founder Joan Austin.

Parrish has held positions of increasing responsibility since joining A-dec in 1985. He most recently served as Vice President and General Manager. Previously, Parrish held the position of Vice President of Product Development, guiding the creation of several major product lines including the flagship A-dec 500® line of dental equipment.

“This is a natural progression for A-dec,” said Ken Austin in a meeting with employees today. “Scott has demonstrated excellent management skills and has built a talented and committed leadership team. We’re proud of A-dec’s history in the dental equipment marketplace and of the continuity this represents for the company.”

“We’re confident in Scott’s ability to lead A-dec into a new era,” said Joan Austin. “The mutual respect he enjoys with A-dec employees, our vendors and industry partners assures us that the company will continue to honor the principles on which it was founded.”

“I’m honored to have the trust of A-dec’s leadership and proud to continue A-dec’s family-run business success,” said Parrish during the ceremony. “A-dec’s focus on quality and customer needs, and its heritage of caring for employees are such integral parts of our company. These values will continue to sustain A-dec.”

Ken and Joan Austin will retain their active presence at A-dec and on the Board.

It’s too bad that Ken and Joan don’t take an active role in running the company. Since the lawyers and accountants took over the day to day operation several years ago, the company has not been the same. While the quality is still top notch, the company has limited its distribution to Patterson Dental and a hand full of independent dealers across the United States. They have also limited repair parts to Patterson and select independents as well. So if you need something repaired, if Patterson is your only choice, and you don’t have an account with them, be prepared for a pretty steep bill for the service call. Something to think about before making your decision on whose dental equipment to put in your operatory.

Ken, I am glad you are enjoying semi-retirement making those intake manifolds for Ardun heads. You found a need and you are filling it.

Just my .02…
