Anesthetic Shortage….Again

Posted by dentalinsider on May 19, 2006

We have been hearing rumors lately of a pending asnesthetic shortage once again this year. Well today it was confirmed, we received a notice from Eastman Kodak, makers of the Cooke Waite line of anesthetic, that they will not be able to fill most of the orders for lidocaine due to a shortage. ( See text from official letter below) We also got verbal confirmation today the Septodont (makers of Septocaine and Octocaine are experiencing a shortage as well. How conveinent!!!
It seems that at least once a year, the manufacturers send us this notice that anesthetic is in short supply and it seems that almost always, it is followed by a price increase. Marcaine has been off the market for months pending approval. Also stated in the EK letter, their other product, Zorcaine, which have had sluggish sales since its launch, is available and they are extending the National promotion on it indefinately. It doesnt make sensethat if you are having an anesthetic shortage to continue a buy 5 get 1 free promotion. Unless you are creating the shortage, to promote a product that is lagging.

What are your thoughts? Post them here or send an email to dentalinsider@gmail.com
