The American Dental Association heads west to San Francisco, California for this year’s annual session. The Scientific program will run from Thursday to Sunday with the World Marketplace running Thursday to Saturday. Many industry insiders that we have spoken with say that this years show will set the tone for the industry in the coming months. How the economy effects the dental industry will surely be on everyones mind. If you are attending the Scientific programs, make sure you take some time to head down to the exhibit floor and see what the exhibitors have to offer.
I will not be attending this years show but instead will be heading down to the Podcast and New Media Expo in Ontario, California. Looking forward to seeing and hearing some of the leaders in the Podcast and New Media World. Teresa Duncan and Paul Dutra will be reporting back their perspectives on the show.

Got an email from WP and I thought I would pass along this information regarding the passing of Bob Satterley, a Belmont sales rep from Northern California.
Please save September 23, Sunday for Bob’s
“celebration-of-life” memorial. We want it to be a
fun party toasting Bob’s great sense of humor and zest
for life.

Nancy Sakaduski from The Sakaduski Marketing Blog is trying to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and needs your help. She is being held in MDA Lockup and is trying to raise bail money for the MDA.
So lets help her out. Make a pledge for any amount, small or large, it goes to a good cause and is a tax deduction as well. We’ll kick it off with $50 from the Dental Insider Blog. You can follow this link to Nancy’s wanted poster and make a pledge. Every little bit helps.

3M/ESPE has recently addressed the growing “gray market” problem here is the United States. The recently released literature piece talks about various aspects of dealing with “gray market” goods including ways to detect if you have any “gray market” goods and a list of authorized 3M/ESPE dealers in the United States and Canada. 3M/ESPE did a very nice job on the piece and I congratulate them on taking steps towards educating the dental professionals on the “gray market” problem
You can download the Gray Market Brochure here.

Henry Schein Inc. and 4 others have been name in a lawsuit alleging that they were diverting drugs to the gray market.
This action alleges that the Big Three Wholesalers, Henry Schein, and Does 1- 1000 (collectively “defendants”) knowingly diverted or caused the diversion of pharmaceuticals and vaccines into the uncontrollable gray market, rendering such drugs unsafe, adulterated, and non-reimbursable by government health care programs.

When we got back from vacation last week, we had quite a few emails from our readers. One email caught my eye and I found it quite interesting and thought provoking. The reader told of a situation that he has run into in his sales territory and asked what my opinion was of the situation. After thinking about it for a bit, I thought I would share it with all of you.
(Names, companies, and locations have been left out intentionally, and we are giving you the Readers Digest version of this email.)
The reader says that a little over a year ago a sales rep for one of the major wholesale manufacturers, was hired by a retail supply house. Many of the retail sales reps in the area were concerned that the guy who they had taken into their offices during co-travel days, would now be their competition. Their fears came true as this new retail rep started cold calling on alot of their existing customers, even offering extreme discounts to try and get the business. When confronted at a local dental society meeting, his only response was…it’s business and I have a family to support.
What are your feelings on this situation? I feel that it’s OK to cross over from the wholesale to retail side, but you can’t do it in the territory that you were working as a wholesale rep. Example…if you were a wholesale rep in the Seattle/Tacoma area, then you would have to make a retail territory outside your wholesale territory…like Spokane or Portland…you get the picture.
What do you think?
I know that Dental Insider readers have some opinions on this…let’s hear them. Post a comment or send an email to dentalinsider{at}gmail(.)com

This was sent to me by our local Boy Scout Troop scoutmaster.
On Tuesday, September 11th, 2007, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this anniversary of our country’s worst tragedy. We do this in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.
In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn’t take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds.
Action Plan: So, here’s what we need you to do…
(1)Take a moment to think back to how you felt on 9/11 and let those sentiments guide you.
(2) Fly an American flag of any size on 9/11.
Honestly, Americans should fly the flag year-round, but if you don’t, then at least make it a priority on this day.
Thank you for your participation.
God Bless You and God Bless America!
