Where there is gold, there is greed. Dental laboratories have long fought to keep a watchful eye on the employees that do the casting and handle the alloy. When you figure an ounce of Gold is running over $660, there is bound to be some technicians that don’t do the right thing. But I found this most recent story extremely interesting for a couple reasons. First, this is a Dental Services Group Laboratory and is owned by the Sentage Corporation. The Sentage Corporation owns about 26 laboratories, and some of them are the largest labs in their area. You can check out their website at www.dentalservices.net and see the labs they own.
The second reason I found this interesting is because it has been happening for over 15 years, all the way back to 1991! Plus, if you read the entire article you will note that the company was not even the one who finally caught on, it was the Sylvania Police Department who notified them of an ongoing investigation. So that makes the lab managers really stupid or it makes it really easy to steal scrap from a lab this size. If I were to guess I would say it is a mixture of both, and probably less stupidity on the part of management and more likely a blind trust of an employee who has worked for you for so many years. I don’t really know, but you can all read the story and be the judge.
