It’s hard to believe that as of Sunday morning July 1st, half of 2007 is in the books. Where did the time go? If the second half of 2007 is anything like the first, we are in for a wild ride. It appears that another independent dental supply house is in play and we could see a bidding war between HSIC and PDCO for this company, only time will tell.
I received an email from a reader that I found interesting, it came from an East Coast supplier, here is the body of the email.
BECKER PARKIN was sold. We have access to hundreds of products that are not on the attached list. Please send us anything that you were buying
from Becker and we will do our best to source the product for you.
So it leads me to believe that BP was backdooring product to smaller and larger dealers across the U.S. and Canada, a violation of just about every major manufacturers dealer agreement. So how much of BP sales were at wholesale to resellers? Is HSIC going to continue this practice? What are you thoughts?
Joe Sakaduski over at Sakaduski Marketing had an interesting post this week regarding consolidation in the industry. It got me thinking about the future of the industry and where we are going and where we have been. So here is my question for you to ponder over the coming days, and if you desire, post a comment or send us an email.
Where do you see the dental industry in 5-10 years? Will the small independent dental dealer still exist and what will their role be? What will the role of the large (Big 2) dealers be? What will happen on the manufacturing side? More consolidation?
We will be taking a few days off for the 4th of July holiday, sparse posting at best depending on wi-fi service. Have a happy and safe 4th of July holiday!

ANNAPOLIS, MD: June 14, 2007 - The Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures (OSAP) has announced a “YouTube” style contest for video clips that promote infection control in the operatory. Anyone can enter the I See IC Dental Reality Contest by uploading a video clip on the OSAP website. The video clips will be posted on www.OSAP.org, where visitors can vote for their favorites.
To enter the I See IC Contest, participants should prepare a video clip of up to 90 seconds in length that either captures good infection control procedures in action or unmasks the hazards of poor technique. Clips may be serious, humorous, or downright offbeat, as long as they get their message across. A link on the OSAP website will allow entrants to upload their video clips for consideration. The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2007. A panel of judges will evaluate the clips for scientific and creative merit. Prizes will be awarded both to the judges’ choice and the winner of the popular vote.
Contest rules and criteria for acceptable entries will be posted on the OSAP website. There is no charge to enter. All entries become the property of OSAP. For more information, go to www.OSAP.org.
OSAP is the Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures. Founded in 1984, the non-profit association is dentistry’s premier resource for infection control and safety information. Through its publications, courses, website, and worldwide collaborations, OSAP and the tax-exempt OSAP Foundation support education, research, service, and policy development to promote safety and the control of infectious diseases in dental healthcare settings worldwide.

MELVILLE, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC – News), the largest provider of healthcare products and services to office-based practitioners in the combined North American and European markets, today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement which will enable it to acquire the full-service and special markets business of Becker-Parkin Dental Supply Co., a privately held company. The transaction is expected to be completed in July. Becker-Parkin’s full-service business offers customers consumable dental products and equipment through field sales representatives, and the company’s special markets business serves corporate dental customers with multiple offices and centralized purchasing. Combined, Henry Schein estimates these two businesses will contribute approximately $40-45 million in revenue in its first full year. Henry Schein expects the acquisition to be neutral to 2007 EPS and slightly accretive to 2008 earnings. This excludes a pretax gain of approximately $2 million in 2007, which will be realized upon the disposition of certain businesses of Becker-Parkin. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
